Pretty much resonates with Craig's predictions as far as Mangold winning mass approval (read: Oscar), too.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10794229.post-49437435706528896482007-09-11T15:00:00.000-07:002007-09-11T15:00:00.000-07:00Daniel -- I agree that Mangold is tough to pigeonh...Daniel -- I agree that Mangold is tough to pigeonhole. I'd classify him as one of the "genre-hopper" directors, along with Steven Soderbergh, Ang Lee, Curtis Hanson, and Ron Howard. He's not avant-garde like Soderbergh or artsy-fartsy like Lee; he doesn't scare anyone with signs of eccentricity or a predilection for controversial subjects. I might place him closer to Hanson, whose choices in projects are equally unpredictable but both higher and lower in terms of quality (why the director of L.A. Confidential would dabble in subpar romcoms is beyond me), or maybe Howard, though Howard's output is getting more dullsville and unfocused with every film. Mangold is extremely steady, a tad bland, relatively intelligent, and deeply impersonal, and for these reasons I believe he will one day catch fire with a big mainstream hit that wins a slew of awards. Won't be 3:10 to Yuma, though.Craighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01450775188328918558noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10794229.post-22309189615873407912007-09-11T09:23:00.000-07:002007-09-11T09:23:00.000-07:00Craig - James Mangold would absolutely be a throwb...Craig - James Mangold would absolutely be a throwback to the studio age of directors-for-hire, except for the minor confusion that he has generally been a writer-director. "3:10 to Yuma" and "Identity" are the movies he didn't write himself and I'd wager he probably did extensive rewrites. That then leaves me trying to figure out what draws Mangold to projects, what his career's thematic through-line might be. I waver on whether or not I'm an auteurist, but if I were, he would probably frustrate the heck out of me... I doubt he'd rank high in Sarris' pantheon, but I don't doubt for a second your prediction that he'll eventually win an Oscar.

-DanielDanielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08110645467194876282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10794229.post-14279879737671055672007-09-11T05:43:00.000-07:002007-09-11T05:43:00.000-07:00At this stage in his career it's clear that Mangol...At this stage in his career it's clear that Mangold isn't a great director (though I predict he'll win an Oscar someday). What he is becoming is an increasingly accomplished craftsman who can work efficiently in almost any genre: police procedural (Copland), chick flick (Girl, Interrupted), thriller (Identity), biopic (Walk the Line), Western (this film). His movies are well-made and well-acted, and for me these days I guess that's enough.Craighttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01450775188328918558noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10794229.post-92202113580395357112007-09-10T10:21:00.000-07:002007-09-10T10:21:00.000-07:00You don't want them wearing Maroney out at this po...You don't want them wearing Maroney out at this point in the season. He's used to carrying the ball as part of a two-back offense and he'll be better off letting Morris get some goal-line carries. And the whole team is better if Moss and Welker are monsters.

That doesn't help your fantasy football team at all.
