Proposed Series: Why Dan 'Hates' 'Seinfeld' Rewatch?

I've been thinking, as you do, about fun things I could do on this blog to keep it chugging along and perhaps to accelerate the chugging.

Live-blogging "House Hunters" and "Househunters International" seemed like an idea, though I'm not sure I've ever watched a new episode "live," so probably that's not going to be functional.

Another idea struck me as I was eating a small bag of pretzels sent to me by Hulu:

For the duration of the podcast (but actually long before that), it has been a running joke that "Dan hates 'Seinfeld.'"

Continued below...

This is, of course, a small exaggeration. I don't hate "Seinfeld." I would never hesitate to respect its influence and there have been episodes that I've liked or appreciated on intellectual levels. I also mostly love "Curb Your Enthusiasm," which is essentially "Seinfeld," only with all of the people who annoyed me replaced by people I apparently like more.

I just really dislike "Seinfeld."

I've also acknowledged, without hesitation, that it's not like I've seen EVERY episode of "Seinfeld." I suspect I've watched maybe... Half of the show's 180 episodes? And I certainly haven't seen all of the episodes consecutively, which I'm sure means I've missed much complex ebb and flow of mythology and whatnot.

There's never been any imperative reason to catch up. Or time.

Well, going back to those Hulu pretzels, Hulu paid a lot of money for the series run of "Seinfeld" and I pay a mid-range amount of money for the service formerly known as Hulu-Plus.

Is there an interest in a "Seinfeld" episode-by-episode journey?

It would either be a 180-post expansion on why "Seinfeld" just doesn't work for me -- clearly I just don't get humor with a Northeastern Jewish slant -- or perhaps an extended conversion experience.

Posts might only be a paragraph or two per episodes, general reactions, amusement, annoyance, whatever.

And I could either get tired of the game when it turns out that nobody is reading the posts or when somebody gives me a job that leaves me sufficiently busy that quitting is the only option.

But the bigger question is:

Is there interest from The Readers?

Do a podcast where you talk about each ep after each watch. Could be fun/funny. I know I'd listen.

Absolutely. While I'm not the biggest Seinfeld fan in the world, I've never understood your (obviously exaggerated) animosity towards it. I would definitely be interested in seeing your thoughts.

  6. As someone who also dislikes Seinfeld, though also not enough to call it "hate", I would very much be interested, yes.

Why don't you start with one episode and see how it goes?

    1. Because nobody in their right mind -- including me -- would say that "Seinfeld" was "Seinfeld" when it started.

  12. Yes please. I'm similar to you somewhat in that I've seen less than you but what I have seen I feel ambivalent towards. It would be nice to read someone else's opinion, to contrast with my own. Like the podcast only with 1 person writing about 1 show.

Just so folk who aren't Hulu members know -- they're currently offering a one-month free trial offer....

    If Dan's in, I'm in!

  16. My first instinct is to say I'd love to see the series again through your eyes, but on second thought, I don't see why you want to do this. I mean, isn't the best part of being unemployed that you no longer have to watch shows you don't like? But, as you say, it's possible you'll realize you do like it after all.

  17. I actually had a similar thought when I read about your retirement. Please do this.

  21. The last 4 seasons were anything but great (especially the last 2) but first 5 were fantastic. It's just beyond me how can someone not like season 4, for example.

  22. The thing is, the "bad" Seinfeld is not a huge commitment. The first season was 4 episodes, and the second season was 13, and even in that batch you get Gems like The Chinese Restaurant" and "The Deal", which are awesome. If you get to season 3 and are not laughing at "The Pen", there's no helping you out. :)

Doing a rewatch myself, and just up to episode 4 of season 2 - it's just starting to hit a groove, but I'd forgotten that most of that first batch of 5 that made up "season 1" are pretty dire. (Did you guys cover the pilot on the podcast when you did your summer rewind last year? Can't remember.)
If you do this I'll pause Hulu till you're up to episode 9 and, like Sepinwall, will read every word.

This Reader would be interested in this, yes.

I'd also be greatly amused and probably way too invested in House Hunters and House Hunters Internationals live blogs if you feel inspired to do them. I think the episodes can be very revealing about relationships. (And I say this as a longtime single person.) I remember one particularly tense episode when John Hodgman tweeted "Every House Hunters International could be subtitled 'What Are They Running From' or 'When Will They Divorce?'" In that particular episode, the male househunter in the couple said, "What's at stake [in the househunt]? My marriage!!" Sheesh... No pressure. This particular husband househunter had a bleached soul patch according to my tweets about this episode. Not all episodes (or househunters) are gems like that one, but man, I do love me some House Hunters and House Hunters International.

A wonderful idea that feels years in the making. You might be a little surprised at some of the Curb-lite stealth serialization in the middle seasons of Seinfeld.
